BOB DYLAN (b.1941)

Bob Dylan (b.1941)
It was hard during the 1960's not to be aware of Bob Dylan but my real interest in him came years later when my friend, Alan Austin played his vinyl collection to me. As my interest and appreciation grew, another friend, Phil, began to supply me with the various bootleg cds that he had downloaded from the internet. Oddly, both these friends eventually rejected Dylan. Alan simply could not cope with Dylan's deteriorating voice while Phil just began sniping at everything Bob did. Of course this was nothing new among Dylan's fans ever since he swapped his folky acoustic guitar for an electric resulting in the madness of Pete Seegar trying to cut the electric cables with an axe and the infamous cry of "Judas" during an English tour. Personally, I've never had a moment's problem with any of Bob's reinventions of himself. From folk singer to crooner of the Great American Songbook via an album of Christmas Carols and songs, Bob continues to surprise. True there aren't that many new masterpieces but, goodness, nobody could have kept up the momentum of those early albums. Few popular artists have been as influential and as prolific as Dylan and for that he deserves our respect.
Keep 'em coming, Bob.

FRANKIE LAINE (1913 - 2007)

Frankie Laine (1913 - 2007)

Frankie Laine is one of several performers who have only one CD in my collection. This certainly does not mean I do not like Frankie. His rousing cowboy themed hits such as HIGH NOON, 3.10 TO YUMA and GUNFIGHT AT THE O.K. CORRAL were (and still are!) great favourites in my younger days and his powerful renditions of such songs as JEALOUSY and YOU GAVE ME A MOUNTAIN are equally memorable. Despite his wonderful voice I suspect that Frankie simply isn't "cool" today. The disc illustrated below is a fine introduction to this great singer.

WILLIE NELSON (b.1933)

Willie Nelson (b.1933)
I suspect I became a fan of Willie Nelson when I saw his film HONEYSUCKLE ROSE. I was already following the career of his friend, Kris Kristofferson, so the connection intrigued me. I loved his singing - not only of Country music but his ventures into Jazz, Western Swing and the great American songbook. There are also to be considered Nelson's seemingly endless list of collaborations with other artists such as Don Cherry, Julio Iglesias, Wynton Marsalis etc. In recent years it would seem that Willie (in his 83rd year as I write this) is determined to sing every song ever written. I've seen Willie three times on stage, twice at Wembley and once when he, rather unexpectedly, did a concert at The Cliffs Pavilion in Southend, only a few hundred yards from my home. Never got to meet the man himself although I did get to chat with his bass player, the late Bee Spears. My collection of Willie's music does (as I have begun to realise as I compiled the list below) reveal an element of OCD!!!

EDMUNDO ROS (1910 - 2011)

From time to time I like to re-listen to something from my childhood. Trinidad born Edmundo Ros and his orchestra was a very familiar sound on 1950's radio. I'm sure that most of my friends would label Edmundo's latin American rhythms as "uncool" but his orchestra was one of the best in England and his arrangements (mostly by the man himself) were first class. I remember Ros with affection so I was pleased that when I purchased LATIN BOSS (an excellent 5 CD collection to celebrate the great man's 100th year) I still found his sambas, cha-chas and bossa nova's quite infectious and my feet were still tapping. In 1975 Ros discovered that members of his orchestra were trying to usurp his control. Ros arranged a celebratory dinner for the band at which he announced his retirement. He then burned all his musical arrangements.

GIUSEPPE VERDI (1813 - 1901)

The question most opera enthusiasts get asked at some time or another is "Puccini or Verdi?" Well, I confess I am in the Puccini camp. I prefer the more intimate Puccini subjects to the spectacular historical extravaganzas of Verdi which sometimes make me shy away from acquainting myself with one not heard before when I want a bit of relaxation. Having said that, the first opera I saw on stage was a production of Verdi's NABUCCO and I was thrilled by a concert of his REQUIEM and it is hard to resist the beautiful LA TRAVIATA. I do like Verdi's operas very much when I finally get around to listening to them. My collection of Verdi's work is almost entirely inherited so I can take no credit for what is listed below. Works are listed with conductors and lead singers for identification purposes.

LOUIS ARMSTRONG (1901 - 1973)

My esteemed friend and fellow blogger, Rickster, once called Louis Armstrong one of the greatest entertainers of the 20th Century and I certainly agree with him, I can't remember a time in my life when I was not aware of Satchmo, probably from his appearances in the movies (his duet with Danny Kaye in THE FIVE PENNIES is truly wonderful). It was later that I actually began to appreciate his music (initially spurred on by my music teacher at school) and began to realise just how great and influential a musician he was. As a player, an arranger, and a vocalist he was innovative but he never lost sight of the fact that he was first and foremost an entertainer. This unfortunately led to accusations of being an "Uncle Tom". This charge, as those who knew him and worked with him have attested was nonsense. Armstrong was an intelligent man who manoeuvred his way successfully through an a period in entertainment history that was undoubtedly racist and while like many other performers of colour he sometimes towed the line he was, essentially, a "breakthrough" artist who led the way and made it possible for others to follow. Thankfully, in recent years there has been something of a reassessment of his importance. But his music was never in doubt and from the 1920's until his death, whether it be with the early, sublime, Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings or the later hit vocals (which brought him a new generation of admirers) his was one of the giants. I think it was Duke Ellington who said of Armstrong, "He was born poor and died rich and never hurt anybody in- between."

CECILIA BARTOLI (b. 1966)

When we get to Mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli we are moving into the area of obsession. My first experience was with the concert LIVE IN ITALY shown on BBC television. I was hypnotised not, I must admit, only by her voice but by the woman herself - her sense of fun, the sheer joy she obviously felt for the music and, let me be honest, her beauty. In recent years each of Cecilia's CDs has become a "project" to honour historical figures like soprano Maria Malibran or composer Agostino Steffani or subjects like music from the Court of Catherine the Great or that written for castrati.  Each album has become an event as well as being educational and, yes, exciting. She is based in Zurich from where she still tours and appears in operas such as CLARI, NORMA and OTELLO (the Rossini version). One of my most thrilling nights was going to see Cecila at the Barbican in London soon after the release of her wonderful MISSION album. A more recent concert at the Barbican was less well received and there are continued worries that as she approaches fifty years of age her remarkable vocal talents are not what they used to be, but she has always had her critics and her champions, like all great performers.
